Try Before You Buy

See What Actually Works in Your Own Home

Choosing a powerchair, scooter or rollator from a website — or even a showroom — only tells you so much. The real test is whether it fits through your hallway, turns in your kitchen, and feels right for the person who'll be using it every day.

We can often bring suitable equipment to your home so you can see what actually works in your own environment — before committing to a purchase.

It's a sensible way to make a bigger decision. Especially for electric wheelchairs, scooters, riser-recliner chairs, and anything that needs to live in a specific room.

Why a home trial often makes sense

  • Check it actually fits through doorways and turns in tight spaces
  • Try it on the floor surfaces and thresholds you'll really use
  • Make sure the user is comfortable and confident with it
  • Hire fees on trials can often be discussed against later purchase
  • No pressure, no hard sell — honest feedback either way

Why We Started

A Local Service for Rural Families

Black Mountains Mobility started for a simple reason. We saw how difficult it could be for rural families across Herefordshire to quickly get the right support at home — particularly after a hospital discharge or a sudden change in mobility.

The nearest mobility shop is often a long drive away. Online ordering can be confusing, and arrives with no help to set anything up. Longer-term equipment arrangements can take time to put in place, leaving families coping for weeks with whatever they can borrow or improvise. And in the meantime, an elderly parent or partner is trying to manage at home.

So we set up a friendly, practical local service. We come to your house, listen to what's actually going on, and bring sensible equipment to try in the rooms where it'll really be used. There's no showroom to visit, no pressure to buy, and no script to follow — just honest local help, the kind we'd want for our own families.

Frequently Asked Questions

A few of the things people most often ask before they call. If your question isn't here, please get in touch — we're happy to help.

Do you visit homes?
Yes. Home visits are at the heart of what we do — most of our customers never come to a showroom (we don't have one). We'll arrange a friendly, unhurried visit at a time that suits you and have a proper look at what would help in the rooms where it'll be used.
Can equipment be hired temporarily?
Yes — short-term hire is one of our most popular services. Hire by the week, the month, or for longer stretches. See our mobility equipment hire page for current rates and what's available.
Do you cover rural villages?
Yes. We cover Hereford, Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury, Leominster, Bromyard, Kington and the surrounding villages — including the more remote spots that other suppliers tend to skip. If you're just outside the county, please call with your postcode and we'll let you know.
Can I hire equipment after surgery?
Absolutely — recovery hire is one of the most common reasons people get in touch. Wheelchairs, transfer commodes, shower seats and rollators can all be delivered and set up before you come home from hospital. Just give us a few days' notice if you can.
What if I'm waiting for longer-term equipment to arrive?
We can often bridge the gap. Plenty of customers hire from us as temporary support while waiting for longer-term equipment arrangements to be put in place, and return the hire equipment once theirs arrives. Hire fees are by the week or month, so you only pay for the time you actually need it.
Do you deliver and set up?
Yes — every time. We bring the equipment to your door, position it in the right room, show you (and any family members or carers) how to use it safely, and answer any questions before we leave. No flat-pack assembly, no instruction manual on its own.
Can relatives arrange equipment on my behalf?
Yes — this is very common. Sons, daughters and grandchildren regularly organise things for a parent or grandparent, sometimes from another part of the country. We're happy to liaise with you by phone, email or WhatsApp, and visit your relative on your behalf. Care homes and professional carers are also welcome to arrange equipment for the people they support.
Do I need to visit a showroom?
No — and that's deliberate. We don't run a showroom. We bring suitable equipment to your home so you can see what works in your own environment. For larger items like electric wheelchairs and riser-recliner chairs, we'd usually rather you tried it where it'll actually live.
Can I send a photo of my room or current equipment?
Yes, please do — it really helps. Send us a photo of the room (a hallway, bathroom, bedside) or the equipment you already have on WhatsApp 07442 088994, and we'll advise where we can. Often a quick photo saves a long phone call.

A note on the scope of our service. We provide practical mobility equipment guidance and home support. We do not provide medical or clinical assessments. For medical advice, please speak to your GP, occupational therapist or healthcare professional.
